what type of insurance is needed?

I am having a struggle deciding what sort of travel insurance is needed - has anyone got any suggestions.
Youngest son is going out to Hong Kong to work for his company - fly out in June but his flight back is not until January - he is going to do some travelling for a few weeks after the contract ends.
We have to pay for the flights ourselves.
So he will be living and working in one place for 6 months but then maybe hostels for a few weeks before he comes back.
I've looked at bag packers insurance which seems very expensive and I cant figure out what the difference is between this and normal annual multi trip insurance - or even if it applies to him.
He will be doing walking, scrambling, sea kayaking but nothing more dangerous than that really. Most seem to cover personal money and loss of passport, that seems to be standard.
He has standard European cover through his bank account and he can upgrade it to worldwide for £20 but as its classed as long stay it will be more but they could not tell me how much more.

Annual policies normally have a per trip limit and a "trip" is defined as leaving and coming back to the UK and so this would be one trip of over 6 months.
Premiums are going to be high because the risk of you needing some form of medical treatment increases exponentially the longer you are away. Something you may decide to live with for a couple of days whilst half way through a weeks holiday is something you go see a doctor for if you are half way through a 6 month holiday.
There is a limited number of providers that offer over 6 months cover and most are badged as "backpackers" as its the most common reason for such extended travel.
If he is going with work are the company providing any form of medical insurance whilst he is out there?
If its only cover for the last few weeks that you need then there are a couple of international insurers that will provide cover whilst you are already abroad and whilst expensive compared to a single trip of the same duration itll be cheaper than getting a 6+ month policy0 -

yes, his company is providing medical insurance while he is working and on contract.
But we are paying for the flights ourselves so I need to cover these plus the period after the contract and before he sets off again for home“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. If you want the flights covered you need to look at a single trip policy, backpackers or otherwise, that will give the 7 months cover you need but due to the duration it will be expensive0
