Pay to cancel job?

Hi, last week we had a plasterer round. We need a wall plastering where the old plaster had blown under the paper. He'd come round before and quoted, but despite me asking for something in writing he didn't provide it (he'd said he'd post it!!). It's not a big wall, it's in a box room.

When he'd come round to quote we'd discussed whether some paper had to be taken off the wall. I thought he'd said that the plaster had to come down, so I chipped it off (it mainly fell off). When he came round to do the job he said the plaster shouldntt have come off and now he didn't have the right materials to do the job.

I was so mortified that I didn't think until after he'd gone that he could just have gone to B&Q and bought more stuff! He has said he'll need to come round again and charge more, and was grumbling about missing out on a day's pay already.

I accept that I must have got hold of the wrong end of the stick but I'm cheesed off with hsi whole attitude. I just want to cancel him and use someone else but I guess I'll need to recompense him for about 1 hour of his time in coming round to qupte and then to turn up for the job,

Am I being unreasonable?

I know what you mean but he has technically missed out by not working on the day he came round to do the job, but didn't.

I don't want to be a pushover but don't want to be a :silenced: either

I am a plasterer, and often work on the strength of a hand shake. In fact , am currently 5 days into a job on these very terms , but there again happen to live in part of the world where someone's word is still considered to be honourable , after saying that your plasterers mucking you about and you didn't get hold of the wrong end of the stick . If the old work was blown ,it needed to come down and he knew it and was probably just making excuses as he had something better to do that day. So I wouldn't lose any sleep over it .
  • hi, could I please ask for some advice. I've been quoted £10 a square metre to skim an artex ceiling initially. The guy hasnt come round, I sent him pictures and measurements. Now he's come back and said it will need a double skim so quoting £20 a square metre but he still hasnt come round to view. Seems very steep to me?! I'm in south west london battersea.

    many thanks in advance :)

square meterage doesn't really work on domestic contracts, as the price would effectively go up the smaller the area to be done. As a stand alone ceiling , you would have to write off a days work and even in London that wouldn't be more than £200 for a plasterer by himself. Though he may have a labourer / apprentice in tow and if so that would be another £80 or there abouts. plus materials. A bag of multifinish onto artex ,probably 7 square meters or thereabouts. Allow a little for plastic sheeting if needed and for PVA / blue grit. From that you could probably work it out yourself .
