New Telly - "screenburn"?

Hi folks - we are finally giving in and have decided to replace our telly - it is one of these big black boxes that sits in the corner.

About a year or so ago I remember there was a row about new tellys suffering from "burnout" or some such thing where the on screen images from some channels - always in the same corner - mean that the picture quality in that part deteriorates. We don't want to buy something that will be a bad buy - has the problem been solved and if not, are some brands more prone to it than others?

It is 15 years since we bought our telly so it has lasted well but it also means we are completely out of the loop on new tech:confused: !

Plasma tvs are prone to the problem you describe but lcd tvs aren't.

But we're now in something like 7th/8th generation plasma and many of the problems the originals suffered are either gone or much reduced. Unless you're going to be watching the exact same channel with a fixed logo constantly, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. To put it in context, the burn in problem with plasmas is now meant to be about the same as the burn in problem for CRTs and when was the last time you worried about CRT burn in? But if you are still worried about it then yes the only TV that doesn't suffer that problem is LCDs but they have their own disadvantages. A lot depends on what you're after, budget, screen size etc and in some case purely down to personal preference when viewing them.

As superscaper said screenburn is turning into a thing of the past, I've had a Panasonic plasma for nearly 3 years and many nights it's been left with a static image for hours ( mostly my fault) and I've never even had a hint of screenburn.

Better off in a new thread I think.

  • Just to add another view - a friend of mine bought a panasonic 42" px70 (lastest model) and left his WII on pause for a few hours - when he came back there was a nice image of a tennis court retained on the screen.

He has managed to get rid of it after some time by using white noise and other such things but screen burn/retention can still occur.

At the time he also had the screen on "run-in" settings - i.e. contrast and brightness turned down to help prevent retention problems.
  • The wii is known for causing screen burn for some reason but has an option in the settings of the console to have a screen burn reducer function :)
