Indian sandstone best choice for patio? Looking for ideas.

Landscaper recommended Indian sandstone for my new patio as basically the best option. I should like something a bit more in character with my late Victorian house, maybe herringbone bricks or tumbled paving slabs with brick spacers but he said this was not a good idea it would breed moss and grass longer term.
Anyone got a largeish patio built recently not using Indian sandstone? What are alternatives?. My house is built from London stock yellow brick and I was thinking of using replica of same for the patio retaining wall.

We had a slate patio laid about a year ago; it's not massive, but large-ish at around 45 sq. metres.
Blue-black slate edged with buff/natural colour blocks and it looks fabulous.
Our garden faces north west and the black colour retains heat which dries the slabs quickly so we have less algae than on the previous slabs.
The house was built early 1920s.0 -
Is it fading? Did you have to have it sealed?0

It is your choice but it is a disaster waiting to happen using LBC stock bricks for a retaining wall. With meticulous attention to detail, problems can be minimised. But the simple solution is to use a proper, durable brick.0

We've had a patio/ courtyard done, pretty big, with Marshalls heritage riven yorkstone (not real!!). The bricks at the edge are staffordshire blue which match the lower portion of our victorian house, and it blends well with the Cheshire brick of the rest of it, and sandstone features around the windows.
Can't tell you the specific cost though, was part of a larger project0 -

It's not fading and we chose not to seal it - so far it's stayed reasonably clean and maintenance free other than sweeping it from time to time (there are a lot of trees hereabouts).
But, it's early days....0 -
what I meant is we plan to use modern clay bricks which are reproduction of the originals. Interspersed with originals we kept from taking down an outbuilding. Is there something different about the modern clay bricks?0
