Debit card no longer works at pay at pump.

My hubby works and drives long hours at night. He has always used his Santander debit card at night on pay at the pump petrol due to no kiosks being open at night.
About 2 weeks ago the machines at Tesco, and Morrisons have all started saying the card type is invalid.
Does anyone know if this change is Santander or the filling stations and know possible reasons.
He has a contact less Santander debit card, and on his account balance a four figure balance with a large unused overdraft to go with it!

Did he have a second card for the petrol ?0

Better to use a credit card than a debit card so I suggest he gets one if he doesn't already have one.0

There was a question on another post about £1 contactless payment for pay at pump.
Among the replies someone tsated that some debit cards didn't work at pay at the pump as it is offline.
Maybe it depends on the system Tesco and Morrisons have installed.0 -

i would of thought their system covered every type of card or they are loosing out if it does not.0 -
It was me on the other thread - and it was a Halifax debit card, used at Morrisons (and the other posters were spot on - the full amount was taken the next day).0

My mastercard won't work if I try to pay at the pump in Tesco even though it works if I go inside to pay. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Update, doesn't work at shell pay at the pump neither.
Hubbys colleague has found all of a sudden neither her Santander or lloyds cards work at any pay at the pump neither. They both do a lot of night driving and pay at the pump Is the only option at night.
I guess he will have to remember to fill up before the manned desk closes now.0 -
I used my Lloyds debit card at Asda pay at pump last Saturday and worked fine. I almost always use pay at pump as like others, I always seem to fill up at night.0

My credit card wouldn't work at a Tesco pay at pump. I went into the kiosk / shop to query it and they asked if it was a Capital 1 card. It was - apparently they don't take those at the pumps, only at the kiosk. To Do 2015

Hubby asked Santander when he was on a call about an unrelated matter. They suggested his debit card maybe damaged as pay at pump uses the magnetic strip as well as chip and pin. They sent him a new card which works fine.
On looking at his old card the strip is in quite a state!0
