A friend has just brought her laptop round. It's displaying a notice in a pop-up screen, allegedly from windows.tekhsupport.com saying that a Security Error has been detected and asking her to phone 020 3805 0586 for assistance. She hasn't done so, thank goodness.
Presumably this is some malware? Does it have a name, and what is the best way of removing it? The laptop is running Win 7.
Thanks for your time.

Interesting.... no google search results for that.. might be a bit too new. However, your first three things to do are:-
1. AdwCleaner from bleepingcomputer.com
2. JRT as above
3. MalwareBytes as above.
If you can manage to keep the logfiles from each, they may be useful.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
disable the browser addons in all browsers, uninstall them in control panel, install malwarebytes and scan
Don't click and accept defaults when installing software in future, and backup - if it was a cryptovirus they would have been stuffed without a backupDon't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -
As above as well as Unchecky will pick up most of these sneaky software checkbox installations which installs unwanted crap http://unchecky.com/
Plus installing Adblock Plus and it's addon Adblock Edge will help prevent nasty popups which ghost installs nasties.“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”
