    Despite increasingly automated processing, some tax returns still require manual intervention/scrutiny.

    More tax returns = more manual processing/scrutiny

    HMRC has been shedding staff, at all levels :cool:*, for many years and I don't see that trend reversing any time soon.

    *my own lucky escape was almost 9 years ago :T:beer::T
