Default on Orange Contract

I went travelling for 3 months in 2013 thinking I had asked Orange to pause my mobile contract, cant remember if I forgot to do it or they failed to after a request over the telephone, on my return I discovered the contract hadnt been paused and had been subsequently sold to debt collectors. I paid the debt collectors not realising this would all lead to me having a default on my credit file. Is there anything I can do at this juncture to improve the situation as I would like to apply for a loan to cover some of the expense of a Masters degree.

Presumably the default shows on your credit file as satisfied, with no outstanding balance?

If so then realistically there is likely to be little you can do at this stage.

You could consider adding a notice of correction to your credit files, to explain the circumstances, however I am not convinced they make much difference to a potential lender's decision.

Have you tried applying for credit and been declined?

You can't simply 'pause' a mobile contract. Did you cancel the direct debit?

The default will stay on your credit file for 6 years, satisfied or not.
How it came to be there is of no interest to your potential future creditors.
