Surface mounted sockets in a kitchen

Can you have surface mounted sockets in a kitchen?

Can you get them where the cable entry is from the back rather than the sides?

The electrician we use has just gone on his hols so I cannot ask him until he comes back, but its playing on my mind so hoping someone here can answer.

Yes. You would have to chase the cables into the wall though.

I don't know, never seen any, but that's not to say they're not allowed - an electrician familiar with the current regs can probably advise.

What I would say, though, is that they may be more of a moisture trap/risk if they're flush with a surface than wall-mounted or with a small vertical bit on the counter.
