Decking a mess

Hi,
I have had my decking down for around 8 years now, I have maintained it almost every year with either oil or decking treatment. Last year I decided I would do it a different colour so used Wilkinsons Mahogany Decking stain and protector. MISTAKE!!! Within weeks it had started to wear, even in areas where we dont walk. I contacted Wilkinsons who contacted the manufacturer. They said it hadnt been prepared properly (baring in mind I have done it for years without any problems and always washed it with a pressure washer and left it to dry for a couple of days before treating) Its almost a year after and it looks as though it hasnt been done for years, there are still some areas which have treatment on and look ok but I would say 85% of it is awful. A couple of questions, do I need to remove it all before starting again (its a very large area of decking so would prefer not to) is there anything out there that anyone can recommend. I certainly cant go natural again as its so patchy. After paying out a lot of money for the proper decking stuff I am seriously thinking of just buying something like fence paint, it certainly cant come off any quicker than the Wilkos stuff has!!!!

I don't see how stain can 'come off' - it's absorbed in to the wood.

If the decking has been oiled each year the stain probably hasn't penetrated.

If you have oiled it previously, then there lies your problem. There will still be oil residue in the timber which will not allow the woodstain to penetrate and adhere.

The manufacturers are right: you haven't prepared it properly as there is still oil on the timber.

    just to reinforce the point.

    this is your reason.

oil seeps into the grain, by oiling it every year for a while you would need to plane a few mm from top of the wood to get it all off, without doing that, stain will never work.
