DVLA Lost my V5 Logbook, now want to charge me for new?

Morning all,

Unsure what I can do with this scenario:
I changed address, so did the online form for changing my 'Drivers license'.
The new license arrived in the post, along with info telling me to cut up the OLD License and return to the DVLA.

I cut up the old license and paperform, and put them in an envelope (inside the main envelope), I also included my V5 logbook for my car to do a change of address, and put that in the envelope.

Its now been 8 weeks, and have not received my logbook back.
A call to the DVLA confirms my logbook is still in my old address.
So now, I have no Logbook for my Car, because the retards who work in the sorting room within the DVLA have lost my V5.

When I ask them on the phone if they can confirm if they have received my old license back, they state that they do not keep a record of old returned licenses.
To which I replied "so if you decide to fine me £1000 for not returning my old license, despite knowing I did return it, how would I avoid your fine ?"
I was told they don't fine anyone, and don't keep checks ? ¬!!!
!!!!!! !!!

Anyway, I am more concerned with the fact that they lost my logbook, they will want a £25 fee to do a new logbook, but more importantly, if they send it to my old address, what use is that ?!!! (am guessing they don't use computers in the DVLA and wont be able to match my driving license name from old to new address which matches with my logbook, etc)...

If I have to pay the £25 fee, I will, just a little concerned given I don't have my logbook at the moment....
DVLA advise to send stuff recorded delivery, but difference would that make, if there sorting office messes up, recorded post would prove nothing! :( grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

It proves it was delivered and as such, is their fault.
  • The problem could be because both items were sent to the same Swansea address.
The DVLA have different postcodes for different requirements and sending something to the wrong address may well cause a delay.

    Beaten to it above.

So you put both in the same envelope?

The DVLA use different post codes for licences and V5's

    Driving licence:
    DVLA
    Swansea
    SA99 1BN

    V5C:
    DVLA
    Swansea
    SA99 1BA

So the DVLA did not sort the mail as you expected?

Ironic that you call their staff "retards", yet you are the one who failed to send the item a) to the correct address and b) by a trackable method.

They have an internal system for post as they receive many documents for the wrong departments, so internal post moves documents around regardless to which postcode they were sent to.
That's why I quote Rtard, kinda like those who like to Troll..... dog eat dog.

licensing is now SA99 1ZW, not 1BN.... and the 1ZW postcode is a general postcode for all documents/inbound mail.
They already confirmed over the phone how all mail is sorted by the sort room....
  • a v5 i would of sent recorded or even next day signed for registered, costs less than £25.

So what should we call you Stuie? They made a mistake with one piece of post out of thousands, you made a mistake on one piece of post out of one! ;)

What proof have you got that they even received the letter?

I never bothered returning my old licence and they've never asked for it. Are you sure there is a £1000 fine? I've never even heard of such a thing.

So how did you send it back? Recorded? Some other way?

Or did you at least get a (free) certificate of posting for the items you sent back?

If you have proof of posting then, as Custardy says, the fault lies with them ... you have the law on your side. (Interpretations Act 1978).
