Is my car covered?

My friend is using my car for a week while his is undergoing repair. He has breakdown cover for his own vehicle, as I have for mine. Would his breakdown policy normally cover him for this contingency?
Thanks in advance.

If he has vehicle-only cover (i.e. cover for a specified vehicle) then No, his cover would (probably) not transfer to him using your vehicle.

If you have vehicle-only cover, then check the terms of your policy - it may well cover him driving your vehicle.

Of more important note ... is insurance all properly sorted for him driving your car?

As above i would be more inclined to check his insurance than worry about breakdown cover.

If he is driving your car on his policy then your car will only have 3rd party cover. If he crashes it and its his fault then his insurance wont repair your car.
You will need to pay for the repairs yourself or scrap it and buy another car.

If he is not properly insured and gets stopped the car will be impounded, does your insurance cover collecting a car from a pound?
This is something they seem to ask these days when taking out a policy.

A few insurances do give fully comp on other cars not owned by the insured. Mine with Hiscox does. I'd be more concerned to check this and see the unsurance certificate if possible. Why? Because if your friend is stopped and done for no insurance, not only will he get 6 points but so will you. Going by your friend's word won't be enough. You need to be 100% sure he is covered insurancewise.

I would never lend my car to a friend. What happens if he crashes it, but his insurance won't pay because it's third party cover only when driving other cars??

Well the solution here is to add him to the insurance temporarily adn ask him to pay any charges for this. Of course any accident will result in higher premiums, but its all down to how good a friend they are

This is an impossible question to answer without reading the terms of the breakdown policy.

There is no 'normally' to be answered, as you usually have a choice between the vehicle and any driver of it, and the person and any vehicle they may happen to be driving.

The insurance implications of lending a friend your car has nothing to do with the OP's question of course.

Indeed they don't but search for the issue on pepipoo and you'll find lots of issues like this that has a real chance of impacting the OP. Too many people assume that their fully comp insurance allows them to drive any vehicle third party, when each policy is different. Mine for instance gives me fully comp on any vehicle provided it's not normally kept on my premises. Other fully comp policies don't allow any other cars even third party.

As well as the heavy fine, the 6 points and the insurance impact of this afterwards, many hire companies won't allow you to hire a car if you have an insurance endorsement on your licence. This is the penalty for allowing an uninsured driver to drive your vehicle.

Is it completely relevant to the OP's question? Perhaps not, but in this instance it's people trying to be helpful.
  • Thanks for the input. There is no problem as far as insurance is concerned, merely the matter of breakdown, if it were necessary. My own breakdown policy, which I have never had to use, covers both me and my wife for any vehicle which we are driving legitimately. The company doesn't even have my vehicle details. However, it does not cover any other persons using my car. Our friend will be phoning his breakdown service tomorrow ( he couldn't find the paperwork this morning) to see what can be arranged.
    Thanks once again.
