Which convertible? Merc or volvo

If you dont need a four seater then without doubt another vote for an MX5.
As has been said, you'll get a mk3 for that sort of money now.
I personally would avoid a (very) used Porsche at that price. Lots of very expensive things to go wrong and to catch an inexperienced buyer out with.0

The other thing about a Porsche is that it is a driving car, not a cruising car, they are not the most comfortable things to ride around in, whereas the Mercs, Volvos and so on, are more designed around being comfortable and performance is secondary.0

The problem I had on a very old Merc was perished rubber on various engine parts, which was age rather than mileage related. Bit prone to breaking coil springs too. Rust is an issue on some models too.
(FWIW, I own a Merc and love it to bits, just a realist on any old car).
I would say you are slightly off with the years. The late 90's were the issue, specifically the E-Class (and the brilliance of a biodegradable wiring loom??? Plus, cheaper steel.
By the mid-00's they were back on form and I would think any car that is 10 years old now and still looks good is going to stay that way for a bit. as there is every chance it is an enthusiasts car. The big issue is staying on top of any car at this age and keeping it looking ok.
Like you though, I love an old barge and I'd still want to look at MX5 or even S2000 before I went for an SLK or something just because these cars do need to be looked at by someone who knows what they are doing. The parts aren't a disaster but the labour can be.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0

            How about a Z4?
My wife loves hers, has been reliable, apart from a pair of rear springs.0

You shouldn't go prestige (BMW, Mercedes-Benz) unless you're willing to take risks in case something goes wrong. THe only way you should purchase these brands is something in great condition with a water tight service history.0

Well I'm going to champion the C70!
They are massively affordable now, the hard top is a huge bonus in bad weather, very roomey inside, looks fantastic, the engine is bullet proof and the underpinnings top notch. Plus they are rare.
I have driven a T5 version and it's immense. Though bought another Volvo in the end (XC60 with the D5 engine) and love it.0
