Experian credit report/score

Hi guys so basically when I was going to uni 2 years ago, i applied for student debit card in order but was sadly rejected due to a low credit score.

2 years later, I've signed up to Equifax for a credit report/score.

My score is 271 which is absolutely terrible and i don't know why this is...

I am 19, a uni student who works part time. I've never owed money, never had to pay for credits or anything. I'm on the electoral role.

The only red box i have is 'Repayment conduct assessment' which i don't know what that means.

Any suggestions on how to improve my credit score would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

First thing is to ignore the score. It's a little secret between you and Experian that no one else ever sees.

Next, check that the info on your report is accurate. Are there any credit agreements there that aren't yours?

Thirdly, you need to build a credit history, The easiest way is to use a credit card sensibly, paying off in full each month. Try someone like aqua or Vanquis.
  • thanks for the reply.

Would aqua or vanquis accept me even with such low of a credit score?

    They don't see the score.

But they specialise in those with poor/ no credit history.

They don't see the score. It's just something the credit agencies create and sell to you.

The credit card companies will assess you against their own criteria and decide whether you are a risk worth taking. This should take in to consideration your wages and ability to pay.

Once again, your 'score' is irrelevant. They can't see it.

As posted above: ignore the score. It bears no weight when a potential creditor looks at your account conduct.

As suggested take a look at Vanquis, Capital One, Aqua etc. Money supermarket are currently running an offer where the Aqua Reward card gives you a £20 Amazon voucher (terms and conditions apply):

    http://www.moneysupermarket.com/credit-cards/details/?productCode=CC_AQUA_ADVANCE&index=8&count=17&selectedProductId=CC_AQUA_ADVANCE&gid=CC_CREDITBUILDER&page=

The £20 gift card aside one feature of this card is the fact, over time, you could see a reduction in the APR from 34.9% Variable down to 19.9% (representative.)

Capital One used to have a similar card but they've withdrawn it from new applications.

Charge one weeks' food shopping to the account each month (for example) and repay the statement in full after the date it's generated and and before the due date. Do this over a period of six to twelve months and you'll improve your file no end.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

Blimey, sudden wave of lots of "credit score" questions - was there a full moon over the weekend?
