Chunter you should really know what you are talking about before making that type of reply.

RTE1, RTE2 and TG4 ARE transmitted from the Black Mountain freeview transmitter in the north, search google for "black mountain freeview"

If your RTE 1/2 and TG4 are on channel 51-53 you are receiving via freeview.

If your RTE 1/2 and TG4 are on high channels e.g. 800+ you are receiving via saorview from a transmitted in the south.

It can be better to receive Saorview as it it higher quality picture and the freeview channels can blank if/when programs are on which a UK broadcaster has rights to.

For Saorview near Belfast you'll want to pick it up from Clermont Carn transmitter just over the border north of Dundalk.

You'll need a freeview hd box/receiver for both.

I know the BBC aerial will pick up RTE 1 & 2 but do you need an RTE aerial for saorview channels 800 +

We're getting mixed up here between:
Receiving 3 RTE channels through Freeview (from transmitters in NI, using a FreeviewHD tuner) (quite a new development)
    and
Receiving Saorview (Irish Freeview) from a southern transmitter - this is the real thing, and the equivalent of receiving it in the analogue days. The aerial for this is different, but if you're close enough I guess you can get a signal.
The Freeview version will have certain things blocked due to licensing restrictions whereas the real thing won't, but of course, it's harder to receive for most of NI.

with a youview box, can saorview work?

what type of aerial is needed for saorview - would an indoor one work (10 miles from donegal border, sligo transmitter)

AFAIK, any FreeviewHD box will work. That will include YouviewHD boxes. I think there is a difference in the aerial needed for southern transmitters. No-one can answer your last question without experimenting with your aerial, at your property. If you know any of your neighbours are tuned into it, that's a good sign, and if you can see what way their aerial is pointing, that will help.
