So would you initially cut the pay of public servants in some areas?

    YES. Then cut it again.

They all get paid far too much.

Cut down on corruption in general

That's something for society to address as whole. Not just for Government to legislate for. As I would add unproductive output, wastage and inefficiency to your list.

The single biggest thing the chancellor can do to increase tax take and economic activity is to see house building jump from ~120k a year to ~400k a year

That will result in about £700B more of value added and £300-400B more in taxes over the course of a decade.

When I finally told my mother she said, 'Nor do I'. So I decided to be George after my grandfather, who was a war hero. Life was easier as a George; it was a straightforward name."[8]

A tax on cats. Yes they really do kill loads of wildlife, see the evidence of it most days.
Wildlife is more precious than a persons need to bathe a cat.

  • I hear that getting rid of Tax relief for BTL mortgages is pretty high on the list.

Regulating property rentals would be an easier option. Having to register a property as being let would expose a considerable amount of undeclared taxable income.

Now THAT would be a disasterous policy.

Already tried in Ireland in 2002, and reversed in 2004 when both rents and tax evasion went through the roof.
