Cost of led lighting

Hi all,

I'm in the process of costing for the refurbishment of a property and I had the idea to install directional recessed lighting in a few of the rooms - kitchen , bedroom , hallway and lounge.

I heard led's are more expensive but I had no idea of possibly how expensive.

I have been quoted in the region of 5.5k for about 30 downlights - fittings, dimmers and all.

Granted , this is from a high end retailer in London which had a design studio where I saw the lights in action ( so to speak) and really loved it, but given I was only planning to spend a fraction of that, I'm not quite sure where to start.

All I am really looking for is directional recessed downlight spotlight.

I looked online and prices seem to vary a bit. On one particular website , there was a halogen one for £17, another for £32 and an Led for £86 per item!

I'm thinking of sticking to the halogen unless I can find somewhere other than ebay to get something a bit more reasonable priced. I have read the halogen ones need to be changed quite often but how often? Once a year will suit me fine .

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Why not try another 'less high end' shop/supplier? I'm sure they can give you a quote for free. To be fairs savings of 90% are achievable with LEDs over halogens so plenty of scope for reduction in bills, do the maths for the payback for paying more initially.

If it's the normal plug-in halogen lamps (either mains or 12V), then you can get replacement lamps that are a straight swap*. No need for fancy expensive fittings.

If you want to know how much they cost, pop down your local supermarket or DIY store. They are very widely available now.

*But some 12V transformers don't work well with LEDs.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Only two LED Spotlights available that are genuine halogen replacements. That means right colour temp, 95 CRI, dimmable, correct lumens, high quality internal components.

One retails at £15 and the other around £25-£30

5.5k for about 30 downlights seems an awful lot. Wonder what they are?

The opposite of the advice i'd give.

    Hi

Get yourself a 5crewfix catalogue or look at it on line to get a general idea of the bulb & fittings prices .... they're not the cheapest and don't have the best possible range, but at least you'll be armed to negotiate knowing that the figures you have are still pretty steep ....

I found LED bulbs in Sainsburys surprisingly cheaper than Screwfix or Toolstation, my kitchen was refitted, stripped back to bare brick and remodelled, I insisted on LED lights in the ceiling and got 10 of them but at £8 a bulb was costly to replace the GU10's, mine's are dimmable but you can get them that way.
Thanks to all the competition posters.

Just to say, Screwfix are selling packs of LED's for 'normal' light fittings (ES or BC).

They are 8.7W (60W equivalent) warm white or cool white and 5 for £9.99 (=£2 each).

I've replaced my ageing 12W CFL's from my hallway and landing, and they seem fine.

Still haven't got used to the fact that the lights are 'full' on, when you flick the switch!

If I were starting from scratch I wouldn't go for recessed spot lights in ceilings because they are not a good energy saving design. You're basically punching a whole lot of holes in a layer that should keep the warm air in and the cold air out.

I've gone for a surface mounted LED panel in the bathroom and kitchen, some of the new filament type bayonet fitting Led bulbs in shades where they are visible and Philips Hue for colour changing/dimming in the living room and dining room. Philips Hue isn't cheap but nothing like the figures you've quoted. The filament types were £3.85 from toolstation.

  • I replaced GU10's last year with 5W LEDS's I found on Amazon. Packs of 10 cost £47 which I thought was excellent value with a good colour temp.
