Cyclist rear ended me

Then legged it.
Quite self explanatory. Stopped at pedestrian crossing, came to a stop and a cyclist immediately rear ended me.
2 big scratches, and dislodged the left rear panel slightly which I pushed back in successfully (He was a big guy on a big mountain bike). He fell off but seemed alright. After a bit of shouting at each other- Told him to wait while I get my phone, and he made a runner. Didn't even see which direction he went.
Made a report with the police at my local station. Said not much they can do, cctv might show something.

I know someone who should be able to fix it pretty cheap. Any ideas on the level this would effect my insurance even if I didn't claim?

You'll lose 2 years no claims and have increased premiums. If you notify them then they could raise the base premium.

I would just get it repaired cheaply and put it down to bad luck (just like a windscreen crack or parking dings).

I completely agree - I've worked in motor claims in the past and you are definitely better off not claiming unless you have this guys details. If you do t would go down as a 'fault claim' and your NCD would be affected.

So you must have just overtaken said cyclist?

Why did you rush to overtake only to stop meters in front of him?
He probably couldn't have avoided hitting you........ Bikes don't stop as quickly as cars.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I watched someone do exactly that to an old lady on a bicycle, obsessed with "must get in front", overtook her, cut in and then realised the lights were red, hit the brakes and ended up taking out the old lady. :(

Not really, how else would a cyclist "immediately" hit the back of the car? OP must have just overtaken the cyclist.

  • I didn't overtake him. It was 6pm rush hour. I just stopped at lights.

Very easily if they were following them . .. and not paying attention.
The op seems to have answered your question for you.

And I could fill the post limit with videos where drivers have overtaken cyclist and the cut in to stop for lights or traffic.

I could equally fill another post with videos where drivers have tried to block cyclists or bikers from legally filtering/lane-splitting.

Would like the know how a cyclist is gonna hit the back of a car in nose to the tail rush hour traffic.
