Can some one explain why in my inbox with Outlook Express some of the messages have a paper clip symbol at the far left hand side? it cannot be that there is a message attached to them, as some do have an attachment, but the majority do not, and are just e-mails.

If I click on the paper clip, nothing happens that does/doesn't happen as against me clicking on the message, this paper clip symbol has appeared for ages, and I have always wondered why, now is the time for the question, why?

Thanks.

It does mean that they have an attachment. Does your anti-virus add an attachment to say that the e-mail has been scanned and no viruses were found etc?

No it doesn't, at the moment I have 29 e-mails in my inbox 11 have the paper clip, but only 3 have attachments, (8 without attachments).

My anitvirus staes at the bottom of ALL e-mails:-

No virus found in this incoming message.
    Checked by AVG Free Edition.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Do the emails have a "fancy" background or an image embedded in the message signature? This could cause OE to think that there is a file attachment...
    That's Numberwang!

If you look at the properties of an e-mail without a paperclip (attachment) you will find that the Content-Type: will be text/plain

If you then look at the properties of an e-mail with a paperclip (attachment) you will find that the Content-Type: will be multipart

So it does mean that the e-mail contains an attachment to the basic text and if you look, you will find details!

See File, Properties, Details, Message source.

    With attachment:- Content-class: urn:content-classes:message

    Without attachment:- Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

As some one who is not that clued up on computers, if I see a paper clip I assumed it had an attachment, but some do and some don't, if your explanation is correct then how the hell do people like me know??

If all of your e-mails were in plain text format, when you see a paperclip (attachment) then yes, you would have an attachment to detach i.e. an image etc. However if your e-mails are rich text (HTML) embedded objects will appear as an attachment.

Remember that your e-mails may be read by someone who uses a totally different e-mail client to Outlook Express and these e-mail clients often simply display the text and any embedded objects as attachments, which need to be opened separately.

OK I am just going to carry on as usual, because I don't know what you are talking about, I have tried to explain as best as I can, but if I send a message with an attachment, as far as I am concerned it goes with an attachment, if one comes in with a paper clip that is supposed to have an attachment, but doesn't, then the whole lot seems a shambles.

What would happen to e-mails that come to with an actual attachment then?

    would they not arrive?
