Council tax refund

I was very surprised to receive a letter from my former authority today advising I had overpaid my council tax on a property I owned on 1997 and were requesting my bank details to pay the refund.
I checked to see it was all genuine and apparently they have been purging their files.

Simples really, if you pay by instalments over ten months your ten monthly instalments overcharge to take account of the two 'free' months.0 -
Current occupier probably successfully applied to have the Council Tax band reduced. You are lucky as most councils wouldn't bother searching for a previous occupier. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

The value may have tumbled since 1997, I can't see any council giving a previous owner the benefit after so long a period.0

If the property is re-banded as being incorrect from the beginning then the adjustment will be taken back across all accounts to that date. The modern day value of he property isn't relevant.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

Had another look at the information sent and was due to the property being rebranded hence the reason for the refund.
Very impressed after 17 years with Reading Borough Council.0 -
