Hire van insurance claim on my record?

Is this normal?

I was taking out personal car insurance and a claim was flagged up as I was just about to pay over the phone and it turns out that a hire van claim from 18 months ago (that cost £30.00!) where I was at fault has been put on my record... It's bumped my premium up by an extra 50%!!

Is this the norm? If I knew, I'd have paid up the £30 to the van hire company rather than claiming it on their insurance!

All claims or losses even where no claim was made. extra 50% sounds steep but maybe thats just the company you chose or maybe they are fleecing you?

Insurers will never like it when you "forget" to tell them something, kind of makes you wonder what other things you may be forgetting to declare.

Now you have "remembered" go back to confused.com or your aggregator of choice and rerun the quotes with your claim now declared. Some insurers aim at those with perfect records and load massively for any blips, others dont mind as much.

There have been a few here previously that mentioned that DL didnt put any loading on for a single fault claim on an otherwise spotless record.

I tried for new quotes, most quotes ended up double my initial lowest quote, with the new at-fault claim declared!

I've written to the insurance company offering to pay the £30 + any admin fees for the claim to be 'struck off' or labelled at non-fault.

I've got each and every single toe and finger crossed on this!

Is there any link to a publication and/or body I can ask re getting the claim changed? Just so I have something more than 'tasticz off of the mse forum said i could' (!!) if the hire company say they can't?

If they won't accept your offer then there's little you can do.

Bear in mind the claim won't be removed from your record even if they agree to this.

Whatever happens the claim will still have to be disclosed when applying for new quotes.

Do dummy quotes with this as a nil cost claim and see what difference it makes to the premiums to see how cost effective this exercise is going to be.

(Did the claim affect your ncd?)

Surely a non-fault claim on my record is about 100 times better than an at-fault claim? It'll be worth the temporary expense just on that front!

    NCD was unaffected thankfully.

You may think its better but their secret statistics may say the opposite is true.

Why would adding a slightly younger sister with several accidents in the past 3 years lower the premium my claim free policy? Doesnt make sense but i can save money by adding her, I wont though because she will want to borrow my car.

Well - do the dummy quote exercise and you will see.

But it certainly won't be the result you are expecting (if you think the difference will be 100 x more)
