Booked Hotel & Breakfast Through 3rd Party - Only Room Supplied

Hi all,
I just recently got back from a city break with my better half.
We booked the hotel through a third party (venere) who had the best price available for a room & breakfast deal with the hotel. Happily paid (about £52).
On arrival at the hotel we were informed it was a room only booking, and taking breakfast would be an extra £20!
Emailed the third party booking company (venere) who got back to me on the following Monday to apologise and offer to refund the cost of breakfast if we could provide a receipt!
Unfortunately we ate at a small cafe near the hotel and didn't get / keep a receipt from this.
What are my rights with the third party? Presumably they were contracted to provide a service (room & breakfast) and failed to deliver on this. Is it still my responsibility to provide a receipt for the breakfast? Shouldn't they at least just refund the difference from the best "room only" rate?
Many thanks for any help!

They offered you a perfectly reasonable resolution, you failed to act on it. Sending them receipts wasn't such a hard thing to do.0

What did they say when you emailed to say you didn't have receipts?
How did you expect them to know what your losses were if you didn't get evidence?
If you're luckily, they might offer you a nominal amount if you can't show you actually spent more.0 -
If you are ever intending to make a complaint or infer someone/an organisation has cost you money you must keep evidence of the money you spent.
All you can do is email back and say that you felt the £20 was excessive and so mitigated your losses by spending £12 in a local cafe but unfortunately they didnt offer receipts and hope that they offer the £12 as goodwill0 -
Only other thing I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is:
Is there a different price for room only? If there were a cheaper price for room only & you paid the higher amount, you could use this to evidence what your losses are.
If its been the third party charging the correct price for room only but including breakfast by mistake then its a bit trickier - although you could still try push for a nominal refund as above. I mean they are liable for losses incurred but thats not the only way to present it to them - you could also present it that you are asking for a reduction in price to reflect the reduction in services provided. You keep using that word. Just actually had a thought (dangerous concept i know). You say city break and mention breakfast would be an extra £20.....was this in the UK? If so, it may be worthwhile contacting the cafe and asking if they would be able to give you a copy of your receipt.
Most businesses have to keep their till rolls for accounting purposes so if you can tell them date/time & what you bought, they may be willing to look through their records and send you a copy of it.
Long shot but you never know until you try.You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
