World Wide Web went public 6 th August 1991.
Prior to that you would have had to use real life dating agencies.
Tbh I couldn't bring myself to use either version.
I'm not about to turn my late hhsband into a plaster Saint but I don't think I'll ever find anyone else who would match up. He's a hard act to follow.
I don't mind the thought of ending my days a widow. I have my children (maybe one day grandchildren) and good friends. I'm happy enough.0 -

Yes, it was computer dating agencies, you filled in a form, posted it and received names and phone numbers, all you had to do then was ring up.The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
You mean like the Wedded Bliss dating agency set up for the residents of Much Snogging in the Green in The film Carry on Loving....:rotfl::rotfl:
Oo-er Missus......
(You can't beat a good Carry On film):D0 -

That was 1970, Dateline was founded in 1966 and was going strong by 1970.The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
I get that.
I know that the Carry On Film was just a silly send up.
I just introduced the reference for a bit of fun.
There are plenty of perfectly legit dating agencies and dating sites around and I'm sure that many of them have a good track record.
They are just not for me.
Whilst I miss my husband more than words can say I am content with my widowed state. We had 34 wonderful years together,, more than a lot of people get so I consider myself blessed.
If in time to come I am fortunate enough to stumble across a nice man then all well and good but Im not going to go deliberately looking for one.
I csme across some great holiday deals in yesterday's Daily Mail. I don't know what their single supplements are like though. I thought I might ring up and find out.0 -
You'll never know if you don't ring up LessonLearned - so get on that phone.
I have a feeling I know how the rest of your life will go - but its all good...:)0 -
Since retiring we have been on couch tours every year and find them very sociable, the singles mix in well with couples and other singles, but it does seem to be mainly ladies. We have been to Europe , India and Nepal and America and each tour seems to work very well if you are willing to mix.0

Ok - youve got my attention now - Im all agog!
Currently having a few days in Scotland, part holiday part family visit. First time away on my own since my husband died. I'm doing fine.
I am used to travelling on my own but more often that not it was for business rather than pleasure and certainly not for holidays.
Ive kept the page from the Mail and I will definitely give them a ring next week.
You never know they just might have an amazing bargain...;)0 -
I'm sorry if I seem to have inadvertently conveyed the impression that, following my first husband's death in 1992, I was immediately hooked up to 'dating agencies' of one sort or another with the intention of replacing him. Not so.
I was mainly too busy trying to scratch a living however I could. I did join a couple of social 'singles' groups locally, one of which was church-based. There is still a singles lunch club locally. I also went on a Saga weekend. That wasn't a success - it was the wrong generation for me. More like a WWII reunion, which was fine for many people, but not for others of us. I was also asked out for a drink once or twice, I've described what happened. The man who escorted me to my daughter's wedding in 1993 was from a church singles group.
I did actually encounter DH via computers, but it wasn't any kind of a dating agency. He was lonely, wanted someone to talk to, was in an abusive marriage and it spiralled from there. It was something like this kind of a forum, then phone calls, then a meeting, and Bob was your uncle. To find someone in a different part of the country whom I would never have encountered in a million years, that was where the computer came in. It was something called 'Compuserve' if I remember rightly. What surprised me - knocked me for six in fact - was that it was possible to fall in love all over again at age 62, just like a silly teenager, and after a happy marriage when I had really thought, like you, I would never think of a man in that way ever again.
It is possible to travel and to see all kinds of places by putting yourself in the hands of a tour guide. We've met various groups in different hotels in different countries. You don't have to be at all 'intrepid' - don't need to speak a word of any other language or eat unfamiliar foods. All hotels now have a very extensive buffet-style breakfast aimed at pleasing all the different nationalities that eat there. Your accommodation is arranged for you, and you're told what to see, where to go, when to be back. You might like a Viking river cruise - we saw those on the Danube while we were at Passau recently. Shearings tours, for example, bring people to our local airport, stay in the Holiday Inn on site, fly off the following morning, and get taken home by a Shearings coach. The choices are endless.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.
Before I found wisdom, I became old.0
