Mobility scooter repair problem

I took my mother in laws mobility scooter to be repaired at a mobility shop and they told me it needed a new control unit.
They qouted me a price which I thought was excessive and asked them that if I got the part would they fit it, they said yes no problem.
So I got the part for them which had been fully tested, but now motobility place is saying it still dosn't work and they think something else is up with it.
They now say that they have a old one they are going to swap the parts over with to see what the problem is with the scooter.

Why couldn't they have done this in the first place so that they knew what the problem was from the start, instead of telling me what part to get.

My qeustion is where do I stand if it turns out that the control unit was not the problem in the first place and I have just bought this part for no reason?

Also where do I stand if they find something else wrong and start charging more money for other faults?

It may end up being that the part I bought was faulty in which case I will have to send the part back for a replacement item.

I'm just trying to cover all bases wahtever happens.

Many Thanks.

  • Parts darts is a sport played by many industries, the game is played with your money and any prize won also goes to the repairer anyway. I always ask [not scooter specific, could apply to washing machine or car] are you sure its that part ? have you actually tested the part or are you playing parts darts wearing a blindfold ? If they don't like my question they haven't tested the part and if they haven't tested the part first and know its broken, then why are they replacing it ?

See section 15 - its pretty scoolboy level diagnostic & repairs.
