Are you certain its killing the branches?
Mine suffer from Wooly aphid , looks like dirty cotton wool.
I just wash off.0 -
Sorry it kills all the leaves on the branch ,it does look a bit like cotton wool0

Well google Wooly aphid, this is the right time of year.
It can cause some of the leaves to curl up, dry out and go crispy but only if you let it, wash off with the hose. BUT its easy for me, the apple trees are only about eight feet high.0 -

Sounds exactly like woolly aphid
A systemic insecticide will do the job, as will brushing with methylated spiritsNumerus non sum0
