    The taxpayer will lose a lot more than that when you add on the cost of borrowing to buy the shares, and all the fees trousered by the brokers advising Osborne to sell it.

    RBS as it stands today is a very bank to that in October 2008. There's still huge risk attached to the shareholding and no certainty that the road won't get rocky in the future.

    The Labour government at the time had little choice but to spend £500bn bailing out the banks or see the country bankrupted when the banking system collapsed. RBS had been already been bankrupted by Fred the Shred and so now has different difficulties than the other banks bailed out.
