My oven just blew up!!!!!

Luckily my young grandson wasn't in the kitchen when the inside glass on the door just blew into pieces scattering all around the area of the cooker

Can I claim this on my home contents insurance???

Should this happen - should I contact Indesit - the manufacturer?

The cooker was only a basic one bought around 4 or 5 years ago I think but I can't remember where from and haven't got the receipt, only the instruction manual.

Thanks

What is the excess on your insurance, how much would the door cost to replace (or will you have to get a new oven), and what affect would a claim have when you come to renew your policy?

Good point - I'd probably be better to buy a new cooker when I consider the excess and effect on my policy. I could probably buy a new door but it's a pretty rubbish cooker anyway - all the dial markings rubbed off within about a year so I've been guessing temps ever since

I think I will contact Indesit though - I've been racking my brains and I think the cooker may be only about 3 years old but at any age I'm sure they shouldn't blow up

Just as a point of interest- if it's a fitted oven I think it would come under buildings insurance, not contents. I heard it explained once- how to tell what comes under what- if you were to turn your house upside down, everything that falls out would come under contents! Therefore anything that's fitted, eg. kitchens, wardrobes, would come under buildings insurance.

Ovens should last more than 3 years you should contact the manufacturer in writing (use recorded delivery or fax) and make a fuss quoting the law (The Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002, Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982, Sale of Goods Act 1979). If the manufacturer isn't interested contact trading standards because your particular situation is dangerous.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • There was something on telly not long ago about oven cleaner causing this, cillit bang etc.

Thanks, I will use this info when I write the letter.

Well it went with a bang that's for sure!!!
Seriously though, can you remember if the glass was shattering just after cleaning? Not being the best of housekeepers it was some time since I cleaned the cooker  . No doubt Indesit will use that as a get out though, they will find something!
