Tips for moving to Cheltenham

Hi all!

I have just accepted a job offer in Cheltenham and I know nothing about the area.

Can anyone recommend any good areas in or around Cheltenham or point out ant areas to avoid. I can drive so a commute from another area wouldn't be a problem.

A quick look at rightmove has shown me that property is a bit more expensive than I hoped.

Thanks

What's the budget and whereabouts is the job - centre, doughnut, Cleeve...?
  • You can make a nice profit renting out your spare room to punters during the Festival in March.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!
  • The office is close to the racecourse. Other than that I really know nothing about Cheltenham.

Prestbury and Bishops Cleeve are close and there's been lots of building out that way in the last few years. Pittville is also handy but will also be pricey but easy enough to walk into town too. Whadden is more affordable and for good reasons. Tewksbury is quite accessible too from that side of town and I suspect is cheaper than Cheltenham.

Cheltenham is generally quite expensive and it really depends on what your priorities are and what sort of property you want. Gloucester is more affordable but would be a pain getting to the far side of Cheltenham for work.

You were asked what your budget is but you haven't responded - without that it's difficult to give a sensible answer. There's no point in telling you to look in Leckhampton if you only have the money for St Paul's.

Edit: just saw based near racecourse in which case Pittville, Prestbury great suggestions.

I used to commute from Gloucester to near the racecourse. As you say, Gloucester is more affordable. Took me about 40 minutes in peak times. The Quedgeley side of Gloucester, however, would have been too far.

It depends what you decide is reasonable. My commute is currently a bit longer than that but if I had a chance to organise my life from scratch I wouldn't choose to build in 1 1/2 hours of driving every day.

Try to avoid St Pauls and Hesters Way.

Tewkesbury is a cheaper than Cheltenham, and only a few minutes up the M5.
