Rendering assistance

Maybe a daft question but here goes. My outside render is naff. For some reason many years ago the previous owner rendered it but impressed block shaped lines into the render. Makes my house look like it's made of white breeze blocks and is visually unappealing.

Is it possible to render over render or does it need to chip off and start again? Does the latter double the cost?

    Not that uncommon.
My mums house is a poured concrete house from 1850 (!) that has the outside like that.
Are you sure its not a concrete wa ll or is it definitely render??

Definitely render. It's an old house so no cavity walls. The inside of the loft is red brick.

you should take the existing render off.
You could get away with mechanically fixing expanded metal mesh to get the new render to 'key' (or stick)
BUT I anticipate it would be fraught with problems and you would have issues around window openings, particularly the window cills

So in short my advice is to take the existing off, or as a great money saving tip learn to live with it :)
The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D
