At last a use for empty tetrapacks!

Options
I was casting around for something to put my beans in to freeze them. I don't have a lot of plastic containers and they were all used. Casting my eye around the kitchen I spotted an empty orange juice container.

I cut the top off, washed and dried it, stapled the opened end, filled it with beans and put it in the freezer.

I only have a small freezer, so I freeze in a way things will stack. I will use them in future and that will save me buying more plastic boxes.

  • Thats a great idea Moany, thanks for that

  • What a great idea :T I use empty margarine tubs, as they stack neatly. However, they're wasteful of space if they're not full. I'll definitely be using this for small portions in the future :j

The waxed tetrapacks (without the aluminium liner) are great as fielighters. I fill them with little bits of dry wood (the sweepings from my woodshed) and they're brillinant to start a fire.

Great idea but I would put tape over the top rather than metal staples if that's what you've used, I use them as paint pots aswell for the kids.

There is a bit on their site about recycling http://www.tetrapakrecycling.co.uk/recycling.asp
One day I might be more organised...........

Ooh, thanks for that Lil Me. I used their interactive map and found that the Tip near-ish me (in the adjacent borough) will be having a tetra pak recycling point by the end of August.

We'll start saving our cartons now and take them to the tip.

My aunt puts a plastic bag in an empty tetrapack and uses it to freeze sauces etc. When it is frozen she removes the oblong package and stacks it in her freezer.

what fantastic ideas, it has wound me up no end that tetrapak isnt allowed in our recycling bins. What a fab way to use space more efficiently in freezer, shall be doing that for soups, can pretend they are fancy Covent Garden ones LOL

Excellent link lil-me. Found out that although I can't put them in my recycling, I can give them to my sister to go in hers. My recycling is collected by the council whilst my sisters is collected by an independent recycling company. Brill, even less of my rubbish to landfill.

  • I use my tetra packs as soap moulds. The UHT milk ones are just the right size for a batch of soap & make a good bar size when cut.

Thanks everyone. I will be using tape from now on, and using a plastic bag for saucesw. I never thought of cutting the top off and freezing them standing upright for liquidy stuff.

I woke up in the night wondering if empty food cans would work for freezing stuff. Not so easy to stack, but just as cheap! Anyone used odd things to freeze stuff in.
