Question about Very with returns and discount

Options
Hi Everyone,

I opened up a new credit account on the 12/12/2014 and made a purchase using a voucher (£30 off a £50 spend). One of the items were headphones that were supposed to be waterproof, these eventually became faulty and contacted very for replacement and headphones sent back on the 02/06/2015. The headphones are not sold any more so they have re credited the account with just £15, the headphones were priced at £45.

Now this looks like it is due to the voucher now not being eligible for the discount.

We contacted very last night and the representative said they would fire off an email to the credit department? for the £30 to be put back onto the account.

I have a feeling that this request will get rejected, Is there anything we can do about this if this is the case?

Many thanks. :)

What else did you buy to make the order up to 'over £50' and how much was it?
  • Thanks for your reply.

    The other item was £19.00

    So your order price was £45 + £19 = £64

    But with a £30 voucher you actually paid £64 - £30 = £34.

They have refunded you £15, that leaves the amount you have paid as £34 - £15 = £19.

£19 is the price of the second item.

That all looks good to me.

I used to work in a job similar to very and this situation crept up from time to time.

The bottom line is that if you are refunded for the headphones then you do not meet the criteria for the free 30 pound discount in the first place! It is likely to also be part of the promotional terms and conditions, as a good scam to do (not to imply anything about you) would be to buy two items for over 50 pounds and then get one returned, effectively gaining a free 30 pound item.

    =======the below is a theoretical scenario===========

The only thing I wondered was whether the discount, assuming the terms and conditions didn't express the removal of it should you return items (which they would have), should be applied proportionally onto each item. Doing a bit of maths in relation to proportions and we can do:

    45 for headphones, 20 for item x

    45:20 ratio, which is 9:4

30 pound discount applied in the ratio 9:4

30/13*9 = 20.77 which is the amount of the 30 pound discount applied against headphones.

Factor in your 6+ months usage which comes to anywhere between 5% and 10% reduction. 5% would knock off 2.25 and 10% would knock off 4.50 of the value. Lets say 3.23 which is a reasonable amount to take off when you consider usage.

20.77 and 3.23 add up to 24 pounds, which is what should be taken off the headphones. This leaves you with 21 pounds which is probably the theoretical maximum amount that you should be enttled to!! Not too far away from the 15 pounds you got!! If you wanted any more than 21 pounds then you are silly, because you cannot profit from this situation (ie receive a bonus back in cash). Then again you are very likely to only be entitled to the 15 pounds!

Maybe, though, you could try and get an extra 6 quid by quoting my ratios maths and they might just agree with it as a fair way of settling this.
