You would be mad to attempt to change a puncture on the motorway hard shoulder. Suicidal. Elsewhere if safe then yes.
But i wonder how many of you would be able to get an alloy wheel off the hub with the standard tool kit.
They seem to become fused on and a fair bit of persuasion required.

Yes agree, as I said my OH had a puncture a couple of months ago and his car has alloys. I ended up phoning a tyre repair centre to ask if they could suggest how to get the wheel off because it seemed to be welded on and they said a few good hard kicks and this did the trick. He now carries a rubber mallet just in case;) Apparently alloys do stick!

My old car hasn't got alloys and whatever I buy next won't - I just like basic.

Motorway won't be a problem for me, I don't drive on them:)

I was talking to a dealer this afternoon regarding a VW Take Up that I am interested in - only drawback is that it doesn't have a spare wheel, just a can of foam:(

Having checked on the VW main site, it appears that to have a full size spare as an optional extra on a new VW Up is £50, but the dealer told me it would cost £170 for them to provide one in a secondhand car.

I think it is awful that something as necessary as a spare wheel has been excluded and yet lots of gizmos that I don't want or need are considered a necessity.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a cheaper spare wheel, or even a spacesaver?

Why would anybody only want a 40% chance of the can of foam working when with a spare wheel is 100%.

The reason for the difference in the prices between, a dealer fitted accessory and a factory fitted option, is that it is cheaper for the factory to fit all the brackets, fittings and body compartments, while still at the factory, than it costs the dealer to fit them individually, to a car that is already built.
