We had one of these in North West London, had to go through a lot of pain to get our £10 back, which they took as a token to get the privilege to bid !

So stay away from these and definitely complain to police/council etc.
  • I'd give that a wide birth. I got dragged along to one of those a few years ago by my girlfriend and it was terrbile. A complete rip off and some very intimidating thugs walking about to make sure that people don't complain too much. My girlfriend thought she bought some posh hair straighteners only to find that the box contained a different brand. I got her a refund after coming to blows with one of the monkeys, not the MSE way I'm sure but a strong letter of complaint wasn't going to work! Don't be fooled by the venue, the one we went to was at a swanky hotel.
  • god are they still going on? i remember something like it about 30yr ago in wales. we paid about ten pound for a box worth about 50 quid. the con men who had been planted were getting camera,s radio, all great gear. we got a box of crap. worth about 20p.

I remember back aprox 20yrs ago, when i was 16 and a friend and me took a day trip to london and got caught in one of these. We ended up buying a rubbish camera for a fiver just to get out - goods were handed out in a black rubbish bag which was sealed and you weren't allowed to open it till you left.

We were young and nieve, and they took full advantage of us.
    Please don't go to this.

Ditto. Some crappy AM radio that looked like a rolls royce car.

It wasn't on Oxford street, was it?!

BTW, these sales are known as "mock auctions" and trading standards are well aware of them. They generally operate just within the law so little can be done to stop them.

Just Google for "mock auction" and you'll find exactly how these con men operate.

I'm so gald I found this post. What is the address of this event, I definitely will attend to get the bargains.

It seems to be my lucky week - earlier I had my drive tarmaced by some guys who "had a bit spare" from a council contract. Bargain. Then I had a flyer offering me some racing tips, so I joined that. And I've just sent my bank details to a guy in Nigeria, who will in turn send me a few million £'s.

With this much luck, how can my six numbers not come up tonight?
  • Avoid it like the plague, they sell rubbish.

  • There is one of these on Fantasy Island Market at Skegness, my brother in law spent nearly a hundred quid convinced he'd got loads of fantastic stuff, only when the bag was opened he had a mobile phone and a ds and other stuff BUT NONE OF IT WORKED he went back and was told to get lost or go to hospital. stear well clear.

  • My Dad rang me yesterday saying he'd had one of these flyers through the door for a sale today @ a Pub in Clitheroe, Lancs (exact same flyer by the looks of OP) so I got him to scan the flyer and e-mail it to me. Once I saw it all the bells went off and told him to steer clear for all the reasons already mentioned. Searched here to confirm my suspicions but didn't get this thread until today. Will try harder next time.
