You're all pretty much confirming what I originally thought. It all sounds very dodgy and I can't believe the club owners are clueless as to whats going on. Once the scammers have meoved on then its the club that'll take the hit from disgruntled locals. I suggest too that doors close after ten minutes just means that you can't go back in once you've left and realised what a chump you've been. Will go along, with no cash in my pocket just to witness the event, fully expecting stories of unhappy buyers to be in the local rag the next day. Mite try get some pics of it too, see if I can cash in!
malifax - dU know what Radio Leeds had to say about it?
Thanks everybody for your thoughts and opinion.
edit: Oh, since reading your post 'saintscouple' - think i'll stay well clear!! Thanks0 -
Don't forget to alert Argos head office to their marketing reference either, they will also pursue them to ensure brand integrity.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0

Be careful if you make a fuss at these auctions they have the same mentality as wheel clampers.0

I got conned by a mock auction when I was 16.Paid £50 for a cheap watch.
I was terrified going home to what my Mum would say.0 -
I wouldn't go along with the intention of disrupting the auction or taking photos if they are going to have a closed door then you will probably find bouncers on the doors who will probably get nasty if you do anything. As I said earlier better to inform local police, the club stewards, trading standards and let them deal with it.0

Definitely stay away from these sales. They are just a new version of the old-style auctions where you had a mark in the crowd who'd be bidding for stuff, making it look like he was a genuine customer who thought it was really worth buying when really he was a friend of the people trying to offload junk. You used to get a few shops in the West End of London as well as in local high streets taking on short-term rental agreements just to do this - the tourists would get caught out, & you'd have a bouncer on the door stopping people leaving or going back in.
One threatened to make my head roll back home 15 minutes before the rest of my body because I was insisting on my black bag of "goodies" being opened in the shop, but (being the gobby 18-year old girl I was at the time), I just got louder as he got taller. I was making so much noise that people were more interested in what I was saying than the person trying to sell the stuff, so in the end a mark in the crowd gave me back my £20, pushed me towards the door & told me to go home before someone decided to follow me. It was very obvious what he meant, so I took my money & the hint & left.
Alert the relevant bodies, but don't go along trying to make a stand as these days things are more violent & you have nothing to gain by becoming a headline in the local paper. Just stay well away from these things. As the saying goes, if it looks too good to be true, it usually is.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

The old black bag sales, we went to one in Bolton in the old rumbelows store just after they closed down I was only 10 I think (It is now a Game store) some of the s opps rubish they sold was bad and they are very intimidateing if you want to leave. Avoid it like the plague or just go to watch, just don't buy anything.
Flo Flo I love the Real hustle too Jess is hot Im sure you OH watches it for other reasons too

DON'T GO.... We had one in Didcot earlier in the year. You have to pay £1 to go in. Then they said that we had to buy a pen for £5 which entitled us to bid on the goods, and also entered us into a competition later on - there was no competition. They drag u in by getting big lots such as a phone, sat nav, xbox etc and they will bag it up and sell it all for £5 but they are selling it to their own people in the audience, not the public. Because you have seen a bargain... they then ask you if you would buy what he has got on his mind, which could be anything and guess what - the price goes up to £40/£70 and you don't even know what you are getting. My mate paid £70 and got a camera which is about 20 years old! At the end they just chuck you out and lock the doors so you can't go back in to complain or ask for your money back. STAY AWAY!!!!0

Last time we had one here I had a real go at the local paper for advertising it and the local football club for hosting it. That seemed to work quite well so I suggest laying into the local Conservative Club with everything you've got accusing them of working in partnership with criminals.
If these scammers have nowhere to operate then they're out of business.
Saying that you'll oppose their next licence application on the grounds that the premesis has been used for criminal activity is normally a good one.Can I help?0 -
they have one if these on blackpool prom you have to buy a radio for £3 they have returned items and boxes for lcds etc but they have hundreds of dual (asda) hifis so you end up with one of these every time a complete con
and if you are funny they have big blokes on hand to 'escort' you out0
