Fit note extended

Can a GP extend a fit note before it runs out?

Mine runs out this Sunday and I am awaiting MRI next week. They are happy to extend it but on Monday. The problem is my work won't understand me not having a fit note and saying I can't come to work next week. I could tell them that it's not better and that I will get it on Monday. However I will only be able to get it on Tuesday when someone will be able to pick the fit note up for me.

Is there anywhere on an official site where it would say about fit notes being extended? And how soon do you have to provide them to work?

Previously they have extended my fit note and they overlapped (I think the GP wasn't paying attention).

Doctors cant extend existing sick notes, They only issue new ones, And they cant issue you with a future dated sick note, So if it runs out on sunday you need to get the doctor to issue you a new sick note from Monday.

But a doctor can issue a new sick note for a further period of time before the previous one runs out. In other words, they can overlap them. My doctor did exactly that last week. My previous fit note was for Thursday to Wednesday (7 days inclusive) and the new one was for Wednesday to Wednesday (8 days inclusive. So I presume that how they are issued and whether they will overlap fit notes is a choice the GP makes.

A doctor can extend the time of illness by issuing a new sick line, But they cant amend an existing sick line for a longer period. Am sure that's what the OP meant otherwise I've misread

You've misread - look at the last sentence. The OP is referring to overlapping fit notes. It is possible for the GP to do this, at their discretion.

I think the confusion between 'extend' and 'overlap', in this instance, is purely down to terminology. If the OP has a 'sick note' to Sunday and can't see the GP until Tuesday the GP can issue a 'sick note' to cover from Sunday for a week i.e. extend it in the OP's terminology.
When I was working on ESA we regularly saw 'sick notes' issued which started on the date they saw the GP irrespective of the fact that the previous covered to a later date.
