If Beaverbrooks are selling it for £425, then it's worth about £200. Huge mark up on high street jewellers. Shop around, this style is very popular, you'll be able to get a much better deal elsewhere.

I don't disgree in the slightest. I know jewellery mark ups are particularly high, but the same applies to everything. How does anyone know what anything is "worth"? Define worth. Cost price? Cost price where: UK? Asia? It's a tough one.

Successful companies make profits & things are worth what buyers are prepared to pay. A £200, £425 or £850 diamond ring is still a relatively cheap diamond ring in the big scheme of things.

Round brilliant is the shape not the measure of the cut quality - though shape itself does impact price if its well or poorly cut will also impact it and really needs to be known to ensure you know what you are comparing.

Also check if the diamond is certified and if so by which organisation - its well known that some certification companies are more generous than others and so a I1 may become a SI2 or SI1 with a different certifying company.

High street retailers charge top money for often low grade products and their "brand" means nothing when it comes to value. Jewelry quarters in the likes of London, Birmingham, Amsterdam etc are all good options. Some other cities have good companies that do their own manufacture (theres a few in Brighton we've used). Online there are also some good places like BlueNile. All will give you better quality for less money than a high street chain shop.

Mesh - if you are near Glasgow a trip to John MacIntryes in Mitchell Lane might be worthwhile. I haven't bought anything there for quite a few years however they were previously known for good value.
They also had a wide price range not just the higher end bracket.
