Did exactly the same thing here - just bought a cheapo one from argos as backup. Keep in mind though that pay as you go data normally has a 30 day life, so either go contract or only put on what you need.
Advantage of this is that you can connect multiple devices (mine mainly get used to allow the bairn to play minecraft on our server while we are away!)0
