6 year default credit file.

Hi!

I ran into trouble in 2008 after loosing my job. I stopped paying 6 credit cards and was paying them an agreed £5 per month.

I settled all cards with partial settlements in 2009 and 2010.

Some registered them as defaults and some just registered the settlement date.

I called barclaycard today as I made a settlement with them in may 2010, but stopped paying in 2008. They never registered the non-payment as a default. So now it will be on my credit file till may 2016.
If they now register the default backdated to 2008 will this default and partial settlement be off my credit file? They told me the default will but the partial settlement will not be off my file. I thought the six year clock starts from the default date regardless of what happened afterwards.

Thanks!

Whoever is telling you that is talking complete nonsense.

If they backdate a default to 2008 then the whole record of the account gets dropped off your file by the CRAs. The default and any subsequent markers, the lot, everything, there will be zero trace left on your report.

The bank has no control and no say on that, as it's the CRAs that remove/drop it all.

what if the c card company said i didn't default, just non payment for many months. What constitutes a default and can i insist that they mark it as a default?

    Hi jonathanw

I understand your concerns, fermi is correct if the default is back dated as 2008 then this will no longer appear on your credit report.

As you've mentioned some accounts were defaulted and some were settled, both defaulted accounts and settled accounts will remain on your credit report for six years from the default/settlement date.

If you feel the information has been recorded incorrectly by your lender when the account should of shouldn't been recorded as a default then please let us know (If your Credit Report is with Experian as we will be able to query the information that that your lender has provided on your behalf.

If you Credit Report is provided by a different Credit Referencing Agency (CRA) you will need to contact them directly to query the information recorded, here are their contact details:
