Renting in Plymouth

Hi
I am going to be renting in Plymouth soon.
Does anyone on the forum know what the demand is like for renting in
Plymouth and whether there is hot competition - or are there
bargains aplenty to be found (compared to the rest of the country?)
Cheers

Plymouth will soon be on par with Barcelona. You can still rent and buy property at a reasonable price.0

I live in Plymouth and agree with both the above. There are still some bargains to be had and Stoke usually has plenty of rental opportunities. There is a 'villagy' atmosphere there, quite a good community spirit, lots of pubs. Some parts are scruffy and some are well heeled, so a good mix. You might want also want to consider Milehouse, Peverell and Hartley among other good areas close to the city centre.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

Caveatvenditor, my son is also trying to find a rental in Plymouth . I'm cross-eyed from searching for him! What we're finding is how costly the agents fees are. he's going to be a student but the agents fees still seem to be about one to one point five% of annual rent. I guess the agents have to make a living but , wow. My o/h is Plymouth born but hasn't lived there for twenty years now and it seems areas which were rubbish and to be avoided in those days are now highly desirable. good luck with your search.0

I presume if you are going to be renting in Plymouth soon you are going to be a student. Most of the student accomodation tends to be in Mutley/ North Hill area of the city next to the Uni. This is bed sit land and there is always adverts in the local papers (The Herald being the main one) if you want to avoid letting agents fees.
As Pobby says Stoke is Ok but some parts are better than others so you need to know where you are looking. It is quite a long way from the Uni though so no good for students.
If you are not a student Peverell is a good area which is close to Mutley where there are plenty of pubs, shops etc. It is a bit more expensive but you don't get the problems you get with living in bed sit land. It is walking distance to the City centre and there are plenty of buses going that way. Hartley is another nice area more expensive again than Peverell. It is next to Peverell and Mutley so you still get the benefits of Mutley within walking distance.
I think you need to say what sort of accomodation you are looking for and what price range.0 -
Thanks for your help everyone.
I will be renting in the 500-700 range and its seem like I wont have a problem with getting a good deal.
I will be working in the devonport dockyard so I image#ine stoke is a good place to be based?

Try this:
Flats to rent in Plymouth
As you can see the rent is perfect for you so i would say this is an up and coming area! Probably not relevant, but plymouth university is excellent! So lots of students.0 -

Aah got that T-shirt already! Working for DML or MoD?
From what I understand Plymouth is now up and coming. I worked in Devonport over 10 years ago, and it was then very run down, primarily due to the job cuts in the yard.
I do like the Barbican, but avoid Union Street! In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0 -

If you haven't been to Plymouth for 10 years you won't recognise the place. Union Street has practically died away after the Two Trees. The Barbican has permanent outdoor covered seating outside some of the pubs and is still a nice place to go. A lot of shops in the City centre have been converted into bars. Mutley used to have a load of boarded up shops and banks which have been converted into bars and places to eat. The nightlife is excellent.
Stoke is the best area closest to the dockyard for you and you will get something decent in your price range. Plymouth is pretty cheap in comparison with the rest of the country in the letting market (wages aren't too good down there on average)0 -
Don't move too far from the dockyard. Public transport is rubbish. And getting around by car is a pain at school rush hour. As for Stoke being the only place to live I have to disagree. It's OK but not great. Hartley is too far away although Mannamead and Peverell might be a possibilty. Avoid at all costs North Prospect (Swilly) or you might find your car on the next November 5th bonfire. :rotfl:
