Can you not put accidental cover onto your contents insurance?

Mine is less than a tenner a month!

I don't have contents insurance, I really should I know. Maybe if I cancel the mobile/laptop insurances and take out some contents insurance then that would be better and hopefully cheaper?

Have a look into it, do some price comparisons.

Dont forget to use quidco or top cashback, which can give cashback for quotes and/or policies taken out.

It may be cheaper, and you really should have it if you don't already.

With your finances being so close I would still recommend doing a full budget, checking against the last few months bank statements to confirm. This exercise really does start to show areas of spend that you don't realise you do and makes you think about the amount you spend and when you spend.

I was in a very similar position, a baby on the way and a two year old. The other half was on maternity and I was on a rolling contract. We actually had a negative budget living in the overdraught each month and my wages just clearing the minimum payments. I even visited friends and family to simply get a meal and learnt that a cheap can of soup mixed with a decent can of soup is edible. Finding out where all my money really went helped, it changed my mind-set, debt free and saving now, and I still stop and think if I really need that bottle of coke from WHSmiths.

Your partner concerns me with his attitude, maybe you caught him off guard and he feels let down by how his business is going. Is your partner a sole trader, or a limited company? With his company seeming to struggle in collecting payments he could be responsible for all the debts of his company. If he is not a limited company his business accounts also need to be included as any debts that may need to be coved in case of emergency, this could be a reason why he doesn't want to stop his company as there may be a debt issue.

    I have been busy.

I've spoken to sky, I tried to cancel the tv package which would have brought the bill down to £30 a month. They offered me a deal of £29.50 a month to keep everything the same for 6 months so I said yes.

Spoken to my credit card company, they have reduced my payments form £50 to £20 a month for the next 3 months so that will give me some breathing room.

    Dp is a sole trader.

I've posted a rough SOA. i've put Dp's income as £600 because that's what he should pay for bills, he then pays his own personal bills, petrol etc.

I can't take any holiday because i'm using it all before i go on maternity leave.

Why don't you pool all your money and expenses , only lodgers pay rent , how much does he earn ?

I'm not being funny, but reality check needed.

A full time job (37.5 hours) per week at NMW will bring in about £1,000/month. I'm sure the work could be soul destroying, but I know where I work we have plenty of full time factory work which no person seems to want to lower themselves to.

I don't know about your partner, but i'd have more pride working for somebody else and earning my own packet than relying on ever decreasing benefit payments from the state. (Before MSE busybodies message me about being judgemental, I am not!)

On the insurance front - contents insurance can be had for less than £10/month. I'm only paying £7/month for £40,000 cover and extra cover for 3 bicycles outside the home totalling £5,000.
