Government 'Green' Grants

Hi Lads & Ladys.

Can someone please expalin to me these 'green deals' that are around.
There seems to be loads & I'm getting hugely confused & I have a few questions that I can't find anyone to give a difinitive answer.
I have purchased a old farmhouse that has been derelict for sometime with all the problems that brings with it.
Consequently it requires;

External Insualtion
Loft Insulation
Boiler (I would like pellet)
New sewage system
New windows & doors

My questions are as follows;

Firstly what can I claim for? (if anything)
Is there a one-company solution?
Could I fit any of the products myself? (I am more than capable & abit of a perfectionist)
What if the products available aren't what I would like? - Can I 'upgrade' & pay the difference.
Is there a system where I could purchase the product & the government refund me?
Can I claim more than one product?

I did have one of the big insualtion companys out however they couldnt take a before reading due to the house having no heating??

I'm not looking at getting freebies however any help that i could get I would be greatful.

Many thanks

Is it classified as a residential house at the moment?

There are two main schemes, the Energy Company Obligations, this is where the big energy companies like British Gas will give you grants to pay for standard insulation in the loft, or cavity wall insulation. I don't think this would help.
The other scheme is the Green Deal scheme. This is mostly a loan that you pay back through your energy bills, but there are some grants available within the scheme depending on which options you go for, nothing will be free though. To do this you would pay a green deal approved assessor to come and give you an assesment and report and estimates for the costs of various schemes. They do support biomass boilers.

Out of what you have listed External Wall Insulation ECO funding comes and goes, and the GDHIF also comes and goes. ATM neither is available, but when it comes it goes very quickly usually hours of coming available so you have to be quick.

Loft Insulation same as above but just ECO not GDHIF

A Pellet boiler, no help for capital cost but the RHI does more than cover the cost over 7 years. There are companies that put these in for free and they get the RHI maybe a last option if you don't have the money upfront to pay for it.

Nothing I know of for sewerage

Windows and doors the GDHIF is still available for this I think and pays around £1k.

    Is there a one-company solution?

You need a company that is both Green Deal Accredited and MCS accredited there are quite a few out there.

Could I fit any of the products myself? (I am more than capable & abit of a perfectionist)

No, only properly qualified tradesmen and certified companies can do the work.

What if the products available aren't what I would like? - Can I 'upgrade' & pay the difference.

Yes, as long as they meet the minimum requirements.

Is there a system where I could purchase the product & the government refund me?

Only the RHI for the pellet boiler, everything else you have to get prior approval but you still have to use approved companies.

Can I claim more than one product?

Yes, you just cannot claim twice for the same thing.

I did have one of the big insualtion companys out however they couldnt take a before reading due to the house having no heating??

No idea why, prob just a bad sales rep
