I started a ppi claim with charterhouse claims a few months ago, about four weeks ago they sent me six letters informing me they had found evidence of mis sold ppi and about two weeks ago I noticed a payment of nearly £1000 into my bank account. I phoned charterhouse only to be told that the payment was nothing to do with them and that it was probably a "sweetener" from Barclays in an attempt get me to call off the claims against them and that all six claims were still open and ongoing. A week later charterhouse phoned me to ask me to pay the £412 I owe for the claim they had recovered. I had used the money to pay debts by the time they had phoned and now cannot make the payment in full. I've since been inundated with phone calls and been threatened with interest, charges and court, being told that they would win any court case and I would be left with any court costs. A payment plan that I offered of £5 a week was refused by charterhouse. I feel I have been grossly misinformed and am now the subject of some unprofessional, scaremongering tactics. Do I have a leg to stand on or do I just have to find the money from somewhere and pay up??

A bit embarrassing for a CMC to say that as that isnt how the complaints process works with PPI.I've since been inundated with phone calls and been threatened with interest, charges and court, being told that they would win any court case and I would be left with any court costs.
They are correct. Despite how incompetent they may be, you entered into a contract with them and agreed to pay them for it.A payment plan that I offered of £5 a week was refused by charterhouse.
To be honest, i dont blame them. That would take 82 weeks and that is not reasonable.Do I have a leg to stand on or do I just have to find the money from somewhere and pay up??
You need to pay them. They should accept a reasonable payment plan. Possibly 12 months. However, 82 months is too extreme. See if you can agree with them a term that helps both of you. Remind them that if they take you to court, the court could award a repayment plan that is far longer than 82 weeks (although it would damage your credit record for very many years).I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
