A neighbour had their car run into years ago and had to drop the claim because the insurer would only write it off; they are still driving it with the same dent in the wing. Admittedly this one was not cat B, more like cat D.
Cat D would have been easy for them to keep, just deducting the salvage value from the payout.
Cat C likewise, but needs a VIC before a V5C will be reissued or any tax reminders sent.
Cat B cannot be returned to the road, only broken for parts by an authorised breaker.
Cat A must be crushed whole, no parts can be removed.
  • Thanks everyone for all your input. Looks like the end of the road for that particular vehicle then. Shame :(

I'd feel the same about mine. I'm not a sentimental person, but there is one old motorbike I will never sell, and the MX-5 is heading in the same direction in my affections. It's like a very eager puppy. I've probably spent as much again as the car is worth getting it into top mechanical order, and any total loss payment if I wrecked it would leave me well out of pocket. But that's how it works.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
