Removing late payments I didn't know about?

I can't see the markers being removed, as they are accurate. Your issue is with your wife, unfortunately.0

Hi there,
I may not be the only person this has happened to, but i realise a company is unlikely to take me seriously when I tell them - where do I stand?
I had my gas/electric supplied by british gas last year, but decided to switch in april 2014. My wife had recently sold her house and had some money to spare. She offered to settle the account (around £500) before we switched, to which i agreed, as i pay the majority of our outgoings. This is where things get interesting...
my wife has a very colourful credit history, and is very frivolous - hence why I take care of the household costs. she's no stranger to debt collectors and defaults.
I decided to check my credit file in December 2014, as I hadn't done so for a couple of years. What I found shocked me - she hadn't settled the account like she said she would. it had accumulated 6 months of 'late payments' but no defaults. When questioned, she came clean. The reason I hadn't heard anything is because she was intercepting the mail and when it was referred to debt collectors, she requested to remove my name from the debt collectors account so they didn't contact me. When i found out, I paid it off in full.
I knew nothing about this, and have never missed or made a late payment in my life - my credit file proves this.
Can I appeal the late payment markers put on my file on account of knowing nothing about them?
My wife said she told them over the phone to remove my name from the account - are they likely to keep recordings of phone conversations as evidence?
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yes, but they will almost certainly have "lost" them.0
