How to get the ball rolling back to a good credit rating

Just after some advice as to how I should approach improving my credit score.

So after 4 years of severe financial problems I have finally paid off all but one of my creditors which is being managed well (overpayments and on time etc).

I have been in debt for so long I have no idea how to get started with regards to improving my credit score. Done all the major things, made sure my accounts are up to date and challenged any default dates that were incorrect.

So I appreciate that time is a healer and I am thinking ahead, as I would like to buy a house in the next 2 years. However, is there anything else I can do? I don't have a credit card but I was accepted for a new bank account recently (which for some reason dropped my credit score significantly even though it doesnt have an overdraft).

Should I try and get a credit card? I don't need any credit at the moment but I am open to all ideas about getting everything ship shape again.

Using a card sensibly is one of the easiest ways to build a good credit history. Try someone lile aqua or Vanquis.

Use regularly and pay off in full each month.

Should I wait a while before trying for a credit card? I noticed my score dropped after I applied for a new Lloyds current account (even though Lloyds didn't credit check me - I am an existing Lloyds customer).

Just very conscious of it dropping even more due to any rejections..

Don't worry about the score. No one sees it but you.

Have one try, but if rejected, perhaps leave it for 3 months or so.
