Are you a spokesman for the car industry? Im pretty sure most people would want a spare if they had a choice. What would a breakdown service do if you didnt have a spare anyway?
I know this
They ask you for the can of gloop. If you don't have it, or a spare wheel, they simply say "nothing I can do mate".It is the drivers responsibility to have a spare wheel, or the manufacturers provided gloop. (If the spare is punctured, because you already had a puncture on that journey
;), then they will recover you.
Happened to my S.I.L. (RAC I think) However, he did blow the tyre up with his compressor, and followed her the 5 miles home, and blew it up again half way :AI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

Fixed that for you
There are plenty of places you can fit a jack / spare wheel (especially a space saver) without cutting into space significantly - in fact, all the additional soundproofing they use now robs far more space than a spare! And the effect of a spare on economy is hardly more than that Full English you had for breakfast this morning.
But a can of gloop costs pence, whereas a wheel and tyre cuts into their bottom line. And the buying public falls for it :rotfl:0
