Question about settling a claim without insurers involved...

Unfortunately, this company won't just write a cheque out (even though it's less than £500) or pay me upfront at all - despite admitting fault in front of two witnesses.
They have now offered to pay the garage directly for repairs - after the work has been done - but the garage have said they won't release my vehicle until payment has been received. Not ideal.
I've asked for the insurance details but so far they haven't given me them - they say they are still attempting to "settle it themselves" but so far it isn't working....

Ironic that I'm the "victim" in all of this, and yet I've had to do all of the running around getting my vehicle assessed, faxing quotes, etc... whilst the chap who drove into me has had to do nothing!

At this point I'd suggest it's time to stop being so reasonable - sounds like they are dragging this out and simply paying you lip-service. You were willing to let them deal with their mistake without involving insurance companies, for their benefit, provided that your car was repaired correctly at their expense. From what you've said so far I would have no confidence in them reimbursing you in a timely manner (if at all) and I certainly wouldn't be parting with a penny. That they would think that this was a reasonable solution in the first place is ridiculous, you're doing them the favour - they foot the bill!

You should inform them that your patience is at an end and that they either:
    a) Stump up the money for the repair in advance as you will not be paying.
    b) Provide you with their insurance details immediately.

Inform them that your next step will be to start legal proceedings should they not meet your (quite reasonable) demands.
