mattress toppers? how do you use them?

this might seem like a really silly question, but I am looking to buy a matterss topper, but I don't know where they go on your bed. do they go under the bottom sheet, and do you need a zip off cover? or can i just use a mattress protector?

Don't use a topper to revive an old worn out mattress. If your mattress is old then you might be better off buying a complete mattress.

The best way to make a mattress or topper last longer is to use a mattress protector. This will protect the topper from wear. However don't forget to turn both the mattress and the topper on a regular basis.

The main advantages of using a complete mattress are:
    1) The memory foam is the optimum thickness of 2" deep. Most toppers are thinner than this.
    2) A topper can slide around on a mattress and cause more wear/damage.
    3) Extensive testing goes into matching the different components that go into a complete mattress to ensure maximum comfort and durability.

Mine sits on top of the mattress, as does everyone else i know who uses them...From Wiki
Mattress toppers are designed to lie atop an existing mattress. They are made primarily from foam. Their function is to provide a layer of comfort and warmth between the user and the mattress. They are of particular benefit when the existing mattress is worn or uncomfortable. Toppers quite often have a contoured profile to facilitate airflow. Visco-elastic foam toppers are regularly used in medical institutions because of their pressure relieving properties. The foam used in the construction of these memory foam toppers reacts to both pressure and temperature. This combined with its greater density are properties that give them their characteristic "weightlessness" sensation.

    Nice one.

The only thing wrong was that you said "They are of particular benefit when the existing mattress is worn or uncomfortable". Well they can be used to help make an uncomfortable mattress more comfortable, but should never be used to try and revive an old worn out mattress. It would be more beneficial to replace the mattress with a new mattress (even if it is a cheaper model than the old worn out one).

A memory foam topper should help as it will support your body evenly, and prevent pressure points which is often the cause of pins and needles.

Thanks Tim I have taken your advice on this and found it very helpful. I have found several toppers at 3.5cm I have decided to go for this one
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5cm-MEMORY-FOAM-Topper-DOUBLE-190x137cm-57kg-density_W0QQitemZ140147690942QQihZ004QQcategoryZ20479QQcmdZViewItem

    what do you think?

or would you go for the 7cm which is 2.8" and would you buy with or without a cover if i am going to use a matterss protector? is the density ok?

3.5cm isn't deep enough to contour to your body. The optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" (5cm) to 2 1/2" (6.5CM). So the 7cm would be best, but try to find 5cm if you can.
