Then you either didn't use the .gov.uk site, so probably got tucked up by scammers, or you didn't notice the "Other Ways To Apply" tab.
The official website says "Renew your driving licence online with DVLA if you have a valid UK passport." with a big green "Start now" button that takes you to the DVLA website. Forgive me for not half way through deciding to go back to the original website and find a different button for no reason.

"A cheque or postal order". Or pay by card in the PO. Or find where you hid your cheque book, because I'll bet your bank did issue you with one...
No, I don't have a cheque book, but thanks for playing. I also can't be bothered to sort out a new photo and go to the post office and fill out a paper form when I can do it all online - I wasn't actually complaining about being able to, just wondering how the photo situation works.

Coming next: Why don't I get a new passport with the new photo I used for my driving licence?
Well no, that doesn't make sense. If they're doing it one-way (i.e. passport photo can be used for a driving licence photo, but not the other way around) then it makes sense to have the passport photo renewed just before the driving licence.

In theory it'd make sense to get a new licence when your passport photo is renewed if your current licence photo is over XX years old. I understand that this costs money though, which I assume is why they don't do it.

So do it offline, and stop moaning about the government having the temerity to offer you an easier way to do something...
So the solution to the online systems being a bit crap is to use an even more crap and tedious offline solution? "Shut up and be grateful" has never been a good argument, I'm afraid.

It'd just be nice if the government websites were actually, you know, modern and nice to use. For example, hitting the Back button shouldn't break an entire form-filling process. But anyway, this is rather off-topic...

Thanks everyone else for the answers though: I'll just have a really old photo on my licence, and maybe the website is broken for not preventing the use of such an old (5+ years) photo.

Try looking at the very next line...
Before the bit that tells you what you need to apply online, saying you need a passport but making no mention of needing a new photo. There's a clue in there about the source of the photo if you apply online.
I also can't be bothered to sort out a new photo

Oh, sorry. I thought the whole reason for this thread was because you COULDN'T use a new photo and HAD to use an old one.

Here's news for you... Next year, when you renew your passport, all you can do online is pre-fill the form. Then print it out, and post it with a photo...

    Well no. Hence:

However, there was no way of using a new photo apart from my current passport photo. That's fine...

I am aware of this. Aside from it being slightly depressing to have to bother with that, I was wondering what then happens to the driving licence photo after this point, not moaning about having to do it. The question was answered.
