Wasps scratching shed door???

This is a really strange one!
My sister has noticed some wasps clinging onto her shed door (outside)and making a scratching noise. They appear to be scratching away at the varnish.
Any advice please?

They are taking the wood surface to make their nests. (they munch it into a pulp)

I just restain mine as they only seemed to like the places where the varnish/stain wasn't present.

  • Wow, this post is a blast from the past. My father had a wooden shed in his garden and the wasps did the same thing to the door. Well weird isn't it. My father took the vigilante approach and went in with a rolled up newspaper, didn't take long for the wasps to get the message The shed wasn't big enough for my father and the wasps, the wasps had to go lol.

    Yeah, Rikki is absolutely correct.
Have a wasps nest around my property often see them munching away at my wooden shed and fence. Found a empty, yet beautifully constructed, large oval wood shaving nest hanging within an old wooden shed one year, amazing thing to eyeball! Clever little creatures :D

I've got some doing it too.

I like them. It's only in late summer, when they get dismissed from duty that they look for sweet stuff and be a pain. The rest of the time, they're catching flys and mozzies to feed to the larvae (the adults feed on the larvaes sweet waste).

I really want to see one hunt down a horse fly and carry it off. :)
